The Lobster

Santa Monica, California

The original Lobster restaurant was built in 1923 and has served as the ‘gateway’ to the Historical Santa Monica Pier for eight decades. Howard Laks Architects preserved the original 773 square foot restaurant and designed a 4,000 square foot glass and steel platform around the original façade. The elevated platform is cantilevered out toward the pier, giving guests a 180-degree view of Palisades Park, the Malibu coastline and Catalina Island to the south. The project is viewed as a Santa Monica icon and is featured in recent books such as ‘Los Angeles’ by famed photographer Tim Street Porter.
